Since I am incapacitated due to recovering from surgery I got bored and so I built a tiny beacon using a raspberry pi zero W2 which outputs about as much power as a car key fob and I have these signal reports back. The farthest is over 3,200km away! The beacon is sent about every 2 minutes broadcasting: "2M0DDX IO86 10mW" as a data stream. I manage the raspberry pi by using SSH into it from my repurposed MacBook Air which now runs Linux Mint, so the terminal screen you see is what's happening on the pi.

No, your key fob won't go that far - the science lies in the antenna. The antenna for this is about 35ft long piece of wire.

Today I ran a STEM session for primary school kids and demonstrated the use of photogrammetry with 3d modelling and got total engagement when I introduced some models in an unreal engine environment. The kids thoroughly enjoyed it, learned alot and asked some amazing questions! Big thanks to Mr. G for facilitating this. ... See MoreSee Less

Photogrammetry

Turning photographs into 3D models

3D photogrammetry is the process of reproducing a physical item in order to make an accurate 3D model. It can be used to capture everything from people and historical artefacts to aircraft, buildings and even larger structures.

It’s a very good way of making an object tangible and immersive, so you can look around it and see the texture of it.

The applications of digital photogrammetry and 3D modelling are endless, with the technique employed as a solution in property sales, manufacturing, engineering, design, entertainment and more.  3D photogrammetry is a very specialised field and the process is a meticulous one. Vista Craft takes lots of pictures of the subject, and typically there needs to be at minimum two-thirds overlap between the images in order to create the 3D model.

Photogrammetry in Real Estate

Photogrammetry is also used to create virtual models of homes that can be viewed by prospective owners. Many buyers were already relying on online listings to make purchase decisions. And now, a covid-induced shift in culture has probably accelerated the move online for many real estate businesses. At a fraction of the cost, modern photogrammetry enables real estate agencies to create a virtual experience of the homes they advertise.

Mapping

Using photos taken using drones, planes or satellites, photogrammetry has been used to 3D map terrains. With high-resolution images taken from aircraft or submersible vehicles, it is possible to create models of difficult to reach areas – including underwater – with a much faster turnaround time.
